Seal of Belknap County, NH Criminal Division of the Belknap County Sheriff's Department
The Criminal Investigations Division investigates all crimes that occur on county property and works in collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies on a wide variety of cases.

Detectives are trained and equipped with various equipment and instruments used in investigations, collection of evidence and reconstruction of crime scenes. An example of the equipment used is the forensic alternate light source. This instrument was obtained with the financial assistance of United States Attorney Thomas P. Colantuono and it is used to process crime scenes throughout the county. The Department’s crime scene van is frequently utilized by local law enforcement agencies to process various crime scenes.

The countywide Belknap Regional Accident Investigation Team (BRAIT) continues to investigate an ever-increasing number of serious traffic accidents. The BRAIT is a collaborative team of local and state law enforcement officers and civilian mechanical experts that investigate and reconstruct serious traffic accidents throughout the county. The BRAIT is not only working on investigating our serious traffic crashes, but working on solutions to reduce the hazards that cause these accidents.

The polygraph examiners assigned to this division conduct specific criminal investigation examinations, internal affairs and employment security clearance examinations for newly hired sworn and non-sworn employees of the local law enforcement agencies.
