Court Security

Many of our citizens visit the Belknap County Courthouse, located at 64 Court Street in Laconia. This facility houses the Belknap Superior Court, Registry of Deeds, Probate Court, Human Services, and County Attorney’s Office. All persons entering this facility must pass through the security screening area, located on the first floor. Deputy Sheriffs and Court Security Officers handle the security of this facility and the people who work and visit here. Any security needs or concerns can be addressed with our Court Security supervisor, Sargent Timothy Cavanaugh.

Handicap parking is available and the entrance on the ground level may be utilized by persons with disabilities. Please be patient with us as we conduct security screening of all persons entering the courthouse facility.

New Hampshire R.S.A. 159:19 Courthouse Security, prohibits persons from carrying weapons into the courthouse facility. “No person shall knowingly carry a loaded or unloaded pistol, revolver, or firearm or any other deadly weapon as defined in RSA 625:11, V, whether open or concealed or whether licensed or unlicensed, upon the person or within any of the person’s possessions owned or within the person’s control in a courtroom or area used by the court.” Violation of this statute is a class B. felony.

If you are authorized to carry a firearm and you will be visiting the courthouse, arrangements will be made to secure this weapon at the security screening area by the Deputy Sheriff on duty. Please notify the Deputy at the security screening area that you wish to secure a firearm prior to passing through the metal detector. Do not remove a firearm from your person until you have notified the Deputy of this weapon and you have been instructed on the procedure for doing so. Your safety, and the safety of those who work at and visit the courthouse are our first priority.
